Zonsondergangconcert: FEAN

FEAN is the artist-in-residence project of Klanklânskippen (Frisian for sound landscapes), breeding ground and stage for experimentation, with the Frisian landscape as the source of inspiration. While the evening landscape around the museum reveals itself through glass panels to the audience as a work of art in itself, the musicians and poets of FEAN tell the story of the peat bog landscape.

Peat bogs, which formed through plant material being deposited in marshes throughout the centuries, have been drained and cut by humans for peat extraction and development of farming land in a relatively short period of time. The draining causes the soil to settle, the region to sink more and more below sea level, and the peat bogs to burn through oxidation, with high CO2 emissions as a result.

The artistic team of FEAN is made up of Piiptsjilling, a collective consisting of Mariska Baars, Jan Kleefstra, Romke Kleefstra and Rutger Zuydervelt. Piiptsjilling has been going for over ten years now and has several national and international releases to its name. A couple of artists from Belgium have been invited to collaborate on the artist-in-residence project, among them, jazz clarinetist and saxophonist Joachim Badenhorst, who is known for his improvisations and Sylvain Chauveau, who creates minimal compositions for acoustic instruments, electronics and voice.
