For those of you who love a challenge, End & Beginning is one of the most remarkable, unmissable concerts of the festival. On the programme, two pieces: Composition No. 2 ‘Dies Irae’ by Galina Ustvolskaya and a brand-new piece by Alexander Raskatov, both for piano, eight basses and percussion.
When you look at the lives of these two Russian composers, you see a romantic idea of engagement emerge. With Ustvolskaya as the solitary champion of an independent musical sound and Raskatov as a voluntary ‘exile’. And yet, End & Beginning tries to look beyond this. By not focusing on what is different, but rather on shared qualities or actions, it functions as a compass in the globalising world around us with its many challenges.
